Cost of the recipe
If you're not already in the recipe that you want to work with, click on Recipes and then click on the name of your Recipe.
Once you're in the right Recipe, click on Cost.
The Cost page shows a table containing all of the ingredients you've added to your Recipe, with these columns:
- Name of ingredients
- Amount used
- Cost for 100g
- Cost for the recipe
- Cost for one portion
So for example if you've added 200g of Flour to your recipe, and Flour costs 10p per 100g, the total cost of Flour in your recipe is 20p. But if your recipe makes 10 scones (in other words, 10 'portions'), this needs to be divided by 10 to get the cost per portion - so just 2p of Flour per scone.
The Nutrition Program does all these calculations for you, and you can see the results in the table.
The overall costs for the Recipe are calculated based on what ingredients you've added, and how much of each ingredient.
These overall costs for the Recipe are shown at the bottom of the table.
Editing the cost of an ingredient
The Nutrition Program provides a big database of foods and food costs. But these are averages, and prices can vary a lot - depending on things like the manufacturer, the type of ingredient, and where you buy it.
If you know that the Flour in your recipe costs 12p per 100g, you can update your recipe with a more accurate figure.
Click on the row of the table with the Ingredient you want to update.
Beneath the table, click Edit Cost.
Then you can type in the correct amount - in this case, we want to enter 12
.
Pounds and Pence
Make sure to pay attention to whether a cost is provided in pounds or pence. In the table of cost calculations, the costs are shown as e.g. £0.12
But when editing the cost per 100g, you need to enter the amount in pence, e.g.
12
But don't worry, you don't need to guess - The Nutrition Program will always make it clear whether you should use pounds or pence!
Selling price
Click the Selling price to get the price you can sell your product for in a restaurant. The formula is shown on the screen: food costx100/40 and you get a portion and the recipe.
